Preliminary task one: Editing techniques
Editing techniques I plan on using:
Fast and slow paced editing:
The pace of editing can be essential to building suspense in a thriller. I plan on starting of with slow and drawn out cuts in the beginning to set the scene and put emphasis on meaningful moments where there is character introspection happening. When I want the tension to build the cuts will start getting shorter and shorter until the climax have been reached and the audience is left on a cliffhanger.
Parallel editing:
When the boy is in front of the mirror in the bathroom, I am going to cut to his imagination where he is chasing his academic rival, and cut back several times. This will help the audience understand that what he is imagining is only taking place in his head. When the imagination scene starts there will be frequent parallel editing, as well as when the scene comes to an end.
Graphic Match:
I intend to use graphic match, in the form of extreme close ups, when in his imagination the boy is staring straight ahead after injuring the girl (extreme close up) the graphic match will be to an extreme close up of him in the bath room. This will help the audience see that what he is imagining may happen in real life. It should serve as a foreshadowing that what the boy did in his head, he is really going to carry out.
Montage:
I am going to use a montage to show that the bad grade he has received after sitting a test, he has received many times before. There will be a montage of different occasions of the teacher putting his marked test on his desk. This action will be repeated 5-7 times in different shots. The effect of this will be that the audience feels the built up anger and frustration the boy has over the results and when he starts to go a bit crazy, they have context as to why.
Colour grading/ altering the hue:
I intend to use editing to distinguish between what is real (the classroom and mirror scenes) and what is fake (the award scene, and the chase scene)
