Research: Laura Mulvey's Theory
In 1975, Mulvey coined the term “male gaze”
“Male gaze” is a perspective that serves to segment the female body into pieces that dehumanize the woman and subjects all viewers to a presumed heterosexual male viewpoint
This theory suggests women are merely an object to be viewed in the media, and man as a subject does all the viewing and acting.
This can be seen in video games and television too, and as simple as choices of clothing, the way a female character speaks or moves, or where a still camera angle falls that centralizes sexualized areas of the body.
Understanding the male gaze is essential to accurately and respectfully portray gender without objectifying a character.
